Lunar Circuits – Discovering the World of Modular Synthesis
My journey into modular synthesis began during my studies in music composition at SUNY Fredonia. In one of the electronic music studios, I encountered a Moog synthesizer, a custom-built instrument that had been part of the school for decades. Its imposing presence, nearly covering an entire wall of the studio, was both exciting and intimidating.
Under the guidance of my professor, I observed as he patched together the synthesizer’s individual modules. Through these demonstrations, I began to grasp fundamental concepts about sound. I often found myself contemplating things like, “So sound is just sine waves combined in different ways?” or reflecting on the idea that if we were to roll off the harmonics of a triangle wave, only the fundamental sine wave would remain.
Years later, the sounds of modular synthesis began to shape my own musical creations. A visit to a local composer in Buffalo opened my eyes to an incredible array of modular gear, highlighting the complexity of sound production and manipulation through these instruments. Initially, it was challenging to comprehend how the various modules interrelated, prompting me to delve into numerous technical manuals in search of clarity.
While the manuals provided some insight, it was the physical act of experimenting with different patches that truly captivated me. This hands-on exploration led me into a vibrant new world of sound, and I was instantly hooked.
For several months, I worked in my friend's studio to create my album, Hathor Immaterial. Although the experience was fulfilling, I felt an essential piece was missing in my home studio. This realization inspired me to design and build my own modular synthesizer.

Over time, I carefully designed and assembled the necessary modules to generate and process sound within my home studio. This endeavor culminated in the creation of my track "Lunar Circuits," in which nearly all elements were crafted or manipulated using my modular synthesizer.
The music is inspired by the phases of the moon and is composed of three distinct sections. The first section is rhythmic and energizing, featuring regal melodies that ascend while a steady bassline enhances bodily awareness. The second section is graceful and ephemeral, weaving together the ascending and descending motifs from the first part into a rich tapestry of enchanting sounds. Finally, the last section showcases the true purpose of my modular synthesizer—a mesmerizing generative sequence where semi-random sounds emerge within a defined structure, grounded by a bassline created with my analog bass synth, the Moog Minitaur.
I invite you to explore this sonic journey through my latest 20-minute track and discover the depths of your own sound experience.
